NEWSPress Release
Research results using research resources of BioBank Japan (BBJ) have been published in Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
A research group led by Kouya Shiraishi, Unit leader at National Cancer Centre Research Institute, investigated the relationship between a polygenic risk score (PRS) for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and mutations in the EGFR gene in 998 East Asian women who never smoked (518 with EGFR-positive LUAD and 480 with EGFR-negative LUAD) along with 4,544 non-smoking controls. Their findings revealed that the PRS was more strongly linked to EGFR-positive LUAD than to EGFR-negative LUAD. Specifically, the highest PRS group had a much higher risk of EGFR-positive LUAD. These results suggest that genetic susceptibility may be differentially associated with LUAD in never-smoking female East Asian patients depending on the cancer’s mutation status, which could have significant public health and clinical impacts.
